OfficeMax wanted to create an organized, professional furniture department that would attract and engage customers. The home office displays for the retail environments had to generate sufficient ROI to justify its existence, and due to the different store floorplans and layouts, modularity was essential.
People want to reduce clutter and get organized
Today, home office furniture is designed to address the way people work: with a laptop or tablet, and multiple mobile devices that need to be charged daily
Some office furniture is now included in public rooms in the home, so personal style is a key element
Created in-store display vignettes to emulate shoppers’ home offices
Cross merchandised (desk accessories, lamps, chairs, dry erase boards, etc.) and increased sales by suggesting additional products
Departed from traditional office chair merchandising (typically placed against a wall) and turned chairs around, which allowed shoppers to see how they felt when sitting at a desk
Included a video loop/touch-screen kiosk to show customers additional colors/options available
Sales for the furniture exceeded the goals for ROI
